Paynesville
public
library

Paynesville, MN

This proposal for a new Paynesville Public Library provides the community with a much-needed new and expanded public library. This innovative approach focuses on the idea of exploration throughout the facility. This building is inspired by the idea of a cabin in the forest where the large ramps serve as the canopy and the columns serve as trees in a way. Then, when seeing the walls, this representation of a cabin in the woods feels ever so close. The building is designed in a flexible manner with larger beams to limit the intrusiveness of many columns. With only a few walls in the main collection, areas allow for this facility to grow and adapt based on future needs.  Moving back outside, there is a drive-up book drop on the western side. On the southern front, there is a community garden space. The Northern side of the building consists of a reflection pond and a flexible gravel area off of the kid’s zone, which could be used for outdoor learning space, outdoor yoga, and more uses. Throughout the site are paths that allow for meditation and have stopped for those wanting to read outside. From different plant species to the gardens which serve to teach the community the art of gardening, all aspects of the site function for different ways of learning. Overall, every aspect of this proposal focuses on exploration and serves to engage all members of the Paynesville Community.
